The iconic MG brand has officially returned to the South African market, launching three new models as part of its ambitious comeback strategy. The launch marks the brand’s third reentry into the country, with operations initially resuming on 21 January 2025.

A Legacy Revived

Founded as Morris Garages (MG) in the UK over a century ago, MG is now owned by China’s SAIC Motor. Since its acquisition in 2007, MG has grown to become China’s largest single-brand car exporter and the fastest-growing automotive brand in the UK for the past two years.

In 2023 alone, MG produced over 840,000 vehicles globally, with 88% of sales outside China.

Sky Zhang, General Manager of MG Motor South Africa, expressed confidence in the brand’s local reentry.

“MG is more than an affordable car; it stands out as a brand designed for mainstream markets with a unique identity,” said Zhang.

MG is launching with three models, catering to budget-conscious buyers and luxury enthusiasts alike:

    • A midsize SUV offering comfort and style.
    • Warranty: 7 years (5 years/200,000km vehicle & 7 years unlimited engine).
    • Service Plan: 5 years/90,000km.
  3. MG Cyberster (EV) – Starting from R1,399,900
    • An electric sports car with cutting-edge technology.
    • Warranty: 7 years (5 years/200,000km vehicle & 7 years/250,000km powertrain).
    • Service Plan: 5 years/100,000km maintenance.

Focus on Local Market Needs

MG has tailored its operations to meet South African driving preferences, from design tweaks to competitive pricing. The company is also prioritizing local job creation and ensuring efficient vehicle servicing through a National Parts Distribution Centre in Isando, Kempton Park.

Zhang emphasized the importance of a stable parts supply chain and comprehensive after-sales support, which is expected to minimize downtime for vehicle owners.

MG’s Promise: Affordability Meets Quality

The combination of affordable pricing, extended warranties, and locally relevant service plans positions MG as a competitive player in the South African market. With plans to expand its dealer network from 25 locations over the next two years, MG aims to solidify its presence across the country.
