r1.’s Creative Process

r1. is known for his multi-layered, geometric designs. His works often explore urban structures, boundaries, and the spaces in between. He shared that “Purple Hive” was inspired by a walk with his children. They were fascinated by the bees on the jacaranda flowers. This sparked the idea to combine the colors of the flowers, bees, and sky in the mural.

This mural is a new chapter in r1.’s artistic journey. His artwork has been displayed in various locations across Johannesburg, including August House in the CBD and in Soweto.
