The DA has called for improved security at Gauteng hospitals after patients attacked 61 staff members, many of whom were mentally ill as reported by the South African.

Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital experienced the highest number of attacks, followed by seven at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, and nine each at Carletonville and Far East Rand hospitals.

Most attacks were committed by mental health care users or were linked to anger at staff for various reasons.

The DA has urged for specialized facilities for mentally ill patients to reduce the risk of violence against staff.
