Four killed and two police officers wounded in Kayamandi shooting, Western Cape

Four people were killed and four others injured including two members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) after gunmen opened fire in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch on the evening of 26 July, police said.

How events unfolded

According to police, officers from Stellenbosch SAPS responded to reports of a shooting in 7th Avenue, Kayamandi at approximately 17:35. On arrival they found an unidentified man with fatal gunshot wounds.

While processing that initial scene, officers heard further gunfire nearby and moved toward the sound. As they approached, they encountered armed suspects who allegedly opened fire on them. Police returned fire, forcing the suspects to flee.

Casualties and evidence

During the exchange, two SAPS members and two members of the public a man and a woman were shot and taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Officers later discovered four unidentified men with fatal gunshot wounds at the scenes.

Police recovered a 9mm firearm, which has been seized for forensic analysis. Crime scene experts worked through the night gathering evidence as investigations continue.

Investigation and police response

Detectives attached to the Western Cape Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit have opened investigations into four counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder following the shootings.

Acting Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Major General Luyanda Damoyi condemned the attack and said authorities would use available resources to identify and arrest those responsible.

“This senseless violence has claimed several lives and left police officials and innocent members of the community injured. We will utilise every available resource to identify and apprehend those responsible. Those who attack police officers and terrorise our communities will face the full might of the law,” Damoyi said.

Appeal for information

The motive for the shootings remains under investigation and no arrests have been made. Police have asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit anonymous tips through the MySAPS mobile application. Police said all information will be treated confidentially.
