Five killed and one critically injured in fiery head‑on crash on N2 near Mooiplaas

At least five people have died and one person is critically injured after a head‑on collision on the N2 near Mooiplaas, just outside KuGompo City, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport has confirmed.

What happened

The department said the collision involved a Volkswagen Polo and a Renault. The Renault caught fire on impact, trapping occupants inside.

“The Eastern Cape Department of Transport can confirm that five people have lost their lives, while one person sustained critical injuries, following a head-on collision involving a Volkswagen Polo and a Renault on the N2 near Mooiplaas, just outside KuGompo City. The injured have been rushed to a hospital in KuGompo City.”

Casualties and injuries

According to the department, four of the five occupants of the Volkswagen Polo one male and three females died in the collision. The Renault driver was burnt beyond recognition; the driver is believed to have been a teacher at Qumrha Primary School. One survivor was reported to be in critical condition and was taken to a hospital in KuGompo City.

Road and weather conditions

The crash occurred amid heavy rain and treacherous road conditions across parts of the Eastern Cape. The department warned that wet and slippery roads, poor visibility and the possibility of black ice in high-lying areas significantly increase the risk of serious collisions.

Response and road closure

Rescue, recovery and crash investigation teams were working at the scene. The N2 remained completely closed to traffic while teams carried out their work, and motorists were urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.

Department statement and safety appeal

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured survivor a speedy recovery. The department appealed to motorists to take precautions while driving in hazardous conditions.
