Residents of the informal settlement, popularly known as Gomora in Pretoria West, received a glimmer of hope with installing a new borehole to address their water challenges. The initiative, a collaborative effort between the metro and Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA), was inaugurated at the Malusi Youth Development Organisation (MYDO) Community Centre in Pretoria West.

According to Ofentse Madzebatela, MMC for human settlements, the borehole project was proposed by CCBSA to alleviate water scarcity in the community, which currently relies on water tankers and chemical toilets due to service delivery challenges. The timely unveiling of the borehole holds significance amidst the water scarcity crisis gripping Gauteng.

Madzebatela commended CCBSA’s initiative to leverage its resources to address social issues and stressed the city’s commitment to collaborative efforts for improved service delivery. The borehole is strategically located within the existing formalisation project area, benefiting residents and nearby facilities such as creches, the community hub, and the clinic.

MYDO spokesperson Petrus Maponya highlighted the borehole’s positive impact on community gardening initiatives and stressed the need for more localised water projects to address persistent challenges. In December, stakeholders launched a community hub and water system in the Gomora/Malusi informal settlement, providing essential amenities and support services.

However, residents like Khutso Matsepane, Nkosana Ramabele, and Kgabo Mashangwane underscored ongoing water struggles, emphasising expanded access to water resources. Matsepane lamented the disruptions caused by water shortages in daily routines. At the same time, Ramabele expressed concerns about the limited tanker deliveries and tensions arising among residents.

Mashangwane echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the need for equitable access to water resources across the settlement. Despite the strides made with the borehole installation, residents stress the importance of sustained efforts to address systemic water challenges and ensure equitable access to this essential resource.
