Joburg City Power experienced cables catching fire in the Braamfontein area, causing power cuts in the CBD, Braam, and Parktown. According to IOL, the suspected fire source is cable theft and vandalism, prompting an investigation into the incident. Portions of the M1 highway between Empire Road and the Crown Intersection have been shut down to accommodate emergency services work.

The fire was reported in the early hours of Wednesday morning. According to Robert Mulaudzi of Joburg EMS services, no injuries have been confirmed. Joburg City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena believes that theft and vandalism of electrical infrastructure may have been the key cause of the fire.

The City Power crews are equipped with specialised fire departure and recovery equipment to restore power supply. On the other hand, the restoration process hinges on how torn the cables were from the Fordsburg substation to the Braamfontein substation. The preliminary results will be disclosed after the fire has been completely doused and smoke has dissipated.
