Rand Water’s 40-day maintenance may disrupt Tshwane water supply

Rand Water has warned that a planned 40-day annual maintenance programme may lead to interruptions to the City of Tshwane’s water supply. The work is scheduled to run from 29 May to 17 July 2026 and will affect the Palmiet, Zuikerbosch and Mapleton systems.

What Rand Water and the city say

Municipal spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the maintenance is intended to improve the reliability and efficiency of the network ahead of winter, but it is expected to affect large parts of the city.

“The planned maintenance work, according to the water utility, will coincide with Eskom’s planned critical maintenance activities which will enhance operational flexibility across key Rand Water systems to reduce the risk of plant trips and equipment failures,” Mashigo said.

Mashigo warned that Rand Water will switch off some pumps during the Eskom maintenance period, resulting in water supply interruptions. He described the timing as appropriate because the work falls just before the start of the winter season, which the city says is traditionally a low-water-demand period.

Scope of the technical work

The city said the maintenance will include Eskom-related electrical maintenance at the Zuikerbosch and Palmiet systems, as well as:

  • Installing and upgrading motors at Zuikerbosch Raw Water Engine Room 4
  • Replacing critical valves and thrust bearings at the Palmiet, Vereeniging and Foresthill systems
  • Upgrading M11 Pipeline cross-connections within the Mapleton system

Areas and reservoirs that may be affected

The city listed areas that are likely to be affected. Among them are:

  • Atteridgeville
  • Akasia
  • Amandasig
  • Chantelle
  • Florauna
  • Hartbeesthoek
  • Heatherdale
  • Heatherview
  • Ninapark
  • Brakfontein 399-JR
  • Celtisdal
  • Eldoraigne
  • Brakfontein 390-JR
  • Bronberrik
  • Clubview Ext 78
  • Cranbrookvale
  • Christoburg
  • Erasmia
  • Erasmia 350-JR
  • Hoekplaats 384-JR
  • Ga-rankuwa unit 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9

Other reservoirs likely to be affected include:

  • Corobrick Plant
  • Carina Street reservoir
  • Eersterust reservoir
  • Elardus Park reservoir
  • Zwartkoppies o Magalieskruin reservoir
  • Mamelodi R1 reservoir

City communications and earlier impact

Mashigo urged consumers to follow the city’s communication platforms in the run-up to the maintenance period for a simplified breakdown of the affected reservoirs and the areas they supply. The city said consumers will be regularly updated of developments and apologised for any inconvenience.

The city also notified residents of a separate, planned interruption in the Soshanguve L Reservoir supply area on 2 June 2026 from 08:00 to 16:00. The work will affect Soshanguve South Ext 1 and Soshanguve Block TT, where city technicians will replace a leaking coupling on the inlet side of the chamber at the Soshanguve L Reservoir.

The report recalled that during last year’s Rand Water maintenance at Hartebeeshoek, residents of Soshanguve, Mabopane, Ga-Rankuwa and Winterveldt experienced a severe water crisis when that work lasted nearly a month.

What residents should do

  • Follow City of Tshwane communication channels for updates and detailed schedules.
  • Prepare for possible short-term interruptions during the maintenance window.
