Zimbabwean driver jailed 20 years for smuggling explosives at Beitbridge
A Zimbabwean national has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment after explosives were found concealed in a truck intercepted at the Beitbridge Port of Entry near Musina.
Stop at the border and the seizure
The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit in Limpopo said a multidisciplinary team including the Hawks, the Border Management Authority and Musina SAPS stopped the vehicle as it entered South Africa from Zimbabwe. The driver, Edgar Maroto, 42, was arrested on Friday, April 10, after an intensive search uncovered a consignment of explosives.
Authorities seized 3,970 blasting cartridge tubes, 48 capsules of cammex connector and 10 reels of detonator fuse. The exhibits were placed under the custodianship of Musina police and the Musina Explosives Unit processed the scene. The seized items were given an estimated street value of R400,000.
Charges, conviction and sentence
Maroto was charged with unlawful possession of explosives and contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (Poca). He was convicted on those charges.
The Musina District Magistrate’s Court imposed a 15-year sentence for possession of explosives and a 10-year sentence for the POCA contravention. The court ordered that five years of the 10-year sentence run concurrently with the main sentence, producing an effective term of 20 years’ imprisonment.
Authorities respond
Major General Advocate Gopz Govender, Head of the Hawks in Limpopo, praised the arresting and investigative team for their vigilance and professionalism. He said:
“This sentence sends a clear message that the illegal movement and possession of explosives will be met with the full might of the law. We remain committed to securing our ports of entry against threats to public safety.”
Procedural steps recorded
The Musina Local Criminal Record Center documented the scene during the operation.
