Tupac Shakur murder: Duane Davis found guilty after decades
Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis has been found guilty of the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, nearly 30 years after the hip-hop icon was fatally shot in Las Vegas.
Jury reaches verdict after less than three hours
A Clark County jury convicted the 63-year-old Davis on a single count of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon following an 11-day trial. Reuters reported that jurors deliberated for nearly three hours before reaching the verdict.
Prosecutors accused Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, of organising the 1996 drive-by shooting after Shakur and his entourage assaulted his nephew earlier that night.
According to an AP News report Prosecutors relied heavily on Davis’ previous public statements, his 2019 memoir and secretly recorded conversations with investigators. Davis’ lawyer argued that his earlier accounts were exaggerated and lacked supporting evidence.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal told jurors: ‘He is responsible of the murder of Tupac Shakur.’
Davis was not accused of pulling the trigger. Prosecutors said he helped organise the attack and supplied the firearm. The alleged shooter and the other men in the vehicle have since died.
Davis faces a possible sentence of life in prison without parole. His sentencing is scheduled for 13 October, and he has indicated that he plans to appeal.
