Why your UIF claim may be rejected and what to do next

Many South Africans rely on the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) for short-term support after job loss, but claims can be denied when eligibility rules or documentation requirements are not met.

Who the UIF supports and why claims fail

The UIF exists to provide temporary financial relief to workers who become unemployed or who face reduced hours, illness, maternity or other covered circumstances. Even so, some applicants find their claims rejected.

According to the UIF, the main reasons for rejection are not meeting eligibility conditions or submitting incomplete documentation. Applicants must also be registered as work-seekers with the Department of Employment and Labour.

Documents you must submit

To apply for UIF unemployment benefits the UIF lists these required documents:

• A 13-digit bar-coded South African ID, passport, or valid foreign national identification document
• A UI-19 form showing the applicant’s employment history
• A salary schedule
• Proof of registration as a work-seeker
• A periodic continuation form (UI 6A), which must be submitted monthly
• A UI 2.11 form if the applicant received a voluntary severance package or took early retirement

When you cannot claim UIF benefits

The UIF also sets out circumstances in which unemployment benefits cannot be claimed. You cannot claim if you:

• receive benefits from the Compensation Fund
• receive benefits from an unemployment fund established under the Labour Relations Act
• have been suspended from claiming UIF benefits because of fraud
• quit your job, resign, or abscond from work
• fail to report to UIF at the required dates and times
• refuse training or advice provided by UIF officials

What to do if your claim is rejected

If you believe your UIF claim was unfairly rejected, the UIF permits an appeal. There are two routes to lodge an appeal:

• Submit an appeal online through the uFiling system
• Complete and submit a notice of appeal form at the labour centre where the claim was rejected

Practical steps to consider

Before appealing, check that all required documents were submitted and that you meet the UIF’s listed eligibility conditions. Ensure your work-seeker registration is current and that any monthly continuation forms (UI 6A) have been filed.
