Three people died during the Burning Man festival held in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, organisers and local authorities confirmed. The festival ran from 30 August to 1 September 2026, and the fatalities raised alarm because the event typically averages one death per year.

Who the victims were

The first death was reported by the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office. A man in his mid-50s, later identified as Sampson Tshombe, was found on a street at the festival on Thursday 3 September 2026. Emergency personnel performed CPR until a certified doctor pronounced him deceased.

Two days later, on 5 September 2026, 60-year-old Craig Mann was found deceased in his trailer, which he was sharing with his partner, the sheriff’s office said.

Third death occurred during transport

The third victim, Armando Ramirez, 51, from Truckee, California, died while being taken to a hospital in Reno, roughly 190 kilometres south of the festival. Ramirez was pronounced dead in the ambulance in the early hours of Friday, the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office said.

According to a Burning Man Project spokesperson, Ramirez experienced a “serious medical emergency” in Black Rock City and immediately received on-site lifesaving measures before being transported toward Reno.

Investigations and official comments

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office said Ramirez’s cause and manner of death remain pending further testing and that there is no concern of foul play in his death. The same applies to Mann and Tshombe, whose cases will undergo autopsies and toxicology screenings; results were said to be expected in six to eight weeks.

Pershing County Sheriff and coroner Jerry Allen noted the toll was unusual for the festival, pointing out that this year saw two deaths within the festival grounds plus a third fatality during transit to hospital. Burning Man organisers issued statements of condolence following each death.
