Suliman Carrim awaits bail ruling as separate car theft charges loom
North West businessman Suliman Carrim awaits a Pretoria bail ruling over alleged commission absences, while separate vehicle theft charges remain pending.
The bail decision is expected at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, following arguments from the prosecution and Carrim’s legal team. The matter has drawn attention because Carrim is also facing separate charges relating to the alleged theft of vehicles.
Bail decision expected in Pretoria
Carrim was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport earlier this month as he prepared to board a flight to Saudi Arabia via Dubai.
He faces charges under the Commissions Act. The allegations relate to claims that he repeatedly failed to appear before the commission.
The court is expected to deliver its decision after hearing the arguments presented in the bail application. Bail proceedings generally require a court to consider whether an accused person should remain in custody while the case continues, with the arguments from both sides forming part of that assessment.
In this matter, prosecutors have opposed Carrim’s release. The State has argued that he is a flight risk.
Carrim’s lawyers have challenged that position, disputing the State’s argument that he could evade trial. The opposing submissions leave the court to determine whether bail should be granted under the circumstances placed before it.
Arrest at OR Tambo International Airport
The arrest took place at OR Tambo International Airport earlier this month. Carrim was preparing to travel to Saudi Arabia via Dubai when he was taken into custody.
The circumstances surrounding the arrest are central to the bail arguments because the State has raised concerns about the possibility of Carrim leaving the country. His legal representatives have contested that concern.
Until the court delivers its ruling, the bail application remains unresolved. The decision will determine whether Carrim is released while the case concerning his alleged failure to appear before the commission proceeds.
Separate vehicle theft case
The bail application in Pretoria is separate from charges heard last week in the Musina Magistrate’s Court.
In Musina, Carrim appeared on charges relating to the alleged theft of vehicles. Police suspect that the vehicles were destined for Zimbabwe before being taken to Malawi.
The bail hearing in that matter was postponed to Friday. This means the Musina proceedings remain pending independently of the expected Pretoria ruling.
The two matters involve different allegations and are being heard in different magistrates’ courts. The Pretoria case concerns the alleged failure to appear before the Madlanga Commission, while the Musina case relates to the alleged theft of vehicles.
What happens next
The immediate development is the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court’s decision on Carrim’s bail application. The ruling will follow the State’s opposition to his release and the defence’s challenge to the flight-risk argument.
The separate Musina case is scheduled to return to court on Friday for the postponed bail hearing. Further decisions in that matter will depend on the proceedings before the Musina Magistrate’s Court.
For now, Carrim remains at the centre of two separate legal processes: one involving allegations under the Commissions Act and another involving alleged vehicle theft. The courts’ decisions in each matter will be made independently.
