Big Announcement: Exclusive Walmart Products Coming to Game, Makro, and Builders in South Africa

Published

on

South African shoppers can look forward to an exciting retail shift as Massmart-owned Game, Makro, and Builders stores introduce exclusive Walmart private label products and unique international items. This development is set to offer consumers greater variety, competitive prices, and access to high-quality goods previously unavailable in the local market.

Walmart Expands Product Range in South Africa

Since Walmart’s acquisition of Massmart in 2011, the retail giant has steadily influenced South Africa’s retail landscape. Now, it’s taking a bold step by bringing in a wide range of private label products from Walmart and other international markets.

With Massmart’s extensive footprint—22 Makro stores, 107 Game outlets, and 104 Builders locations nationwide—these new products will be easily accessible to shoppers across South Africa.

What to Expect: New Products on the Shelves

Herman Venter, Massmart’s Chief Merchandise Officer, announced that the company plans to introduce a variety of Walmart private label items previously exclusive to the U.S. This includes:

  • Private-label toys
  • Snacks and confectionery
  • Baby care products
  • Bulk American breakfast cereals

These products aim to bring fresh options to South African households, with Venter highlighting significant potential in the snack category due to anticipated strong demand.

Supporting Local Suppliers

In addition to international imports, Massmart is committed to strengthening partnerships with local suppliers across South Africa and the broader African region. A supplier summit scheduled for April will target local manufacturers, assemblers, and growers interested in contributing to Massmart’s expanding product range.

This initiative aims to support local businesses, promote economic growth, and increase the presence of African-made products on Massmart’s shelves.

Competitive Pricing and Value for Money

The introduction of Walmart’s private label products is expected to drive competitive pricing, offering South African consumers high-quality goods at more affordable prices. Products such as baby care items, household essentials, and bulk cereals will cater to diverse consumer needs while providing better value for money.

Rising Competition: The Growth of Best Before

Adding to the competitive landscape is Best Before, a growing retailer specializing in food and personal care products at prices lower than major chains like Checkers and Pick n Pay. Founded by Mark Gordon and Alain Soriano in 2017, Best Before focuses on short-dated and past-best-before products that remain safe to consume.

With seven stores across Johannesburg and Pretoria, including outlets in Boksburg, Edenvale, Fourways, and Krugersdorp, Best Before has recently expanded its offerings with unique imports. Shoppers can find brands like Mountain Dew, Oshee, Toblerone, Hershey’s, Bokomo, and more on its shelves.

The company also operates an online store serving Gauteng, with plans to expand its digital presence to other provinces soon, meeting the growing demand for online shopping convenience.

A Dynamic Shift in South African Retail

As Massmart strengthens its product lineup with exclusive Walmart items and Best Before continues to diversify its offerings, South African consumers will benefit from an increasingly varied and competitive retail environment.

The combination of new international products, competitive pricing, and the growth of local suppliers marks a dynamic shift in the South African market, promising exciting options and better value for shoppers nationwide.
