Riverstone Mall Opens in Meyerton: A New Retail Hub Bringing Jobs and Excitement to Gauteng

Published

on

Meyerton, Gauteng, is set to welcome a brand-new shopping destination as Riverstone Mall officially opens its doors on 27 March 2025. This state-of-the-art retail development promises to bring a fresh shopping experience to the area, anchored by some of South Africa’s most popular retailers, including Checkers Fresh-X, Woolworths Food, and Dischem.

Developed by Alley Roads, the mall boasts a gross lettable area (GLA) of 20,000 sqm and will house approximately 53 tenants, including well-known brands like Clicks, Truworths, Mr Price, and Pepkor group. With over 1,000 parking bays, a vibrant food court, and two fast-food drive-thru outlets, Riverstone Mall is designed to cater to the needs of modern shoppers.

Creating Jobs and Boosting the Local Economy

The construction of Riverstone Mall has already made a significant impact on the local community, creating 1,200 jobs during the building phase. Once the mall opens, an additional 250 permanent jobs will be generated, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy.

Ivan Pretorius, founder and CEO of Alley Roads, expressed his excitement about the project:
“We are very excited to have reached this important milestone. With tenant fit-outs nearing completion, we are on track to officially open Riverstone Mall on 27 March, bringing exciting brands and a different kind of shopper experience to Meyerton.”

A Catalyst for Growth in the R59 Development Corridor

Meyerton’s strategic location between Johohannesburg and the Vaal Triangle makes it a key area for growth. Market studies indicate that the region is growing at a rate of 2% to 3% annually, with Riverstone Mall playing a pivotal role in the R59 development corridor.

To further leverage this growth, Alley Roads has launched a residential development adjacent to the mall, comprising 337 units. Additionally, a second development phase is planned, which will add 3,000 sqm of motor-related retail space.

The total investment in Meyerton by Alley Roads is set to exceed R600 million, underscoring the company’s commitment to driving economic development in the area.

Part of a Broader Development Vision

Riverstone Mall is part of Alley Roads’ ambitious 175,000 sqm development pipeline for townships and peri-urban areas. Over the next seven years, the group plans to roll out rural convenience retail centres measuring between 6,000 sqm and 12,000 sqm, primarily in Gauteng, with opportunities also being explored in the North West, Free State, and Western Cape.

This expansion comes at a time when South Africa’s retail sector is showing signs of recovery. Retail trade sales increased by 3.1% year-on-year in December, supported by declining inflation, which reached 3.0% in the same month. Lower inflation has also allowed the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) to cut interest rates three times in late 2024, providing some relief to consumers.

Additionally, the introduction of the two-pot retirement savings system in September 2024 has enabled many South Africans to access a portion of their retirement savings, further stimulating consumer spending.

A Bright Future for Meyerton and Beyond

The opening of Riverstone Mall marks a significant milestone for Meyerton and the broader Gauteng region. By combining retail, residential, and motor-related developments, Alley Roads is creating a vibrant hub that promises to drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the quality of life for local residents.

As Ivan Pretorius aptly put it:
“This is more than just a mall—it’s a catalyst for growth and opportunity in Meyerton and beyond.”

Riverstone Mall is set to become a cornerstone of the Meyerton community, offering shoppers a diverse range of retail options while creating hundreds of jobs and boosting the local economy. With its strategic location, innovative design, and commitment to growth, this new shopping destination is poised to transform the R59 development corridor and set a new standard for retail in South Africa.
