Former South African Boxing World Champion Thobela Passes Away

Dingaan Thobela, a former boxing star from Soweto (widely known as the Rose of Soweto), passed away on Monday in Johannesburg at age 57.

“When he did not answer his mobile phone, we went to his address, got in and saw he had passed away,” an anonymous speaker, who sought to remain unidentified, said.

As per EWN, Thobela, a South African international boxing icon, was active from 1990 to 2006, about 16 years. He was three times world champion across two weight classes, cementing his status as one of the most gifted athletes this country has ever produced.

Thobela won the WBO lightweight world title in 1990, the WBA lightweight world title in 1993, and the WBC super middle title in 2000.
