Amidst a tense atmosphere, the African National Congress’ Doctor Xhakaza emerges as the Ekhurleni mayor following a delayed council meeting.

According to EWN, Xhakaza’s appointment comes after weeks of uncertainty surrounding the mayoral position in the city.

During Thursday’s meeting, Xhakaza secured the mayoral seat unopposed, ending the vacancy left by Sivuyile Ngodwana’s removal from office.

The council chambers, filled with anticipation, finally witnessed the resolution of the mayoral vote, breaking the silence that had lingered for days.

However, the delay in the proceedings was not without cause, as Cooperative Governance MEC Mzi Khumalo met with council officials to ensure compliance with directives.

Khumalo reiterated the importance of adhering to the stipulated timelines, warning of potential intervention under Section 139 of COGTA regulations if the council promptly failed to elect a mayor.

With Xhakaza now at the helm, Ekurhuleni looks towards a new chapter under his leadership, navigating the challenges and opportunities ahead.
