Hospitals to address backlog of surgeries

Gauteng’s finance MEC Jacob Mamabolo announced the provincial budget speech yesterday, revealing that the health and education departments received the most significant portions of the R158bn budget. The health department was allocated R60.09bn, while the education department was given R63.42bn for the 2023/2024 financial year as reported by the Sowetan Live.

The article mentions that the backlog of elective surgeries is due to shortages in personnel and equipment and the Covid-19 pandemic’s knock-on effect on the health system.

To address this issue, the Gauteng provincial treasury and health department have worked with civil society organizations, Section 27 and Cancer Alliance, to procure the necessary machinery and equipment for radiation therapy.

Collaborative public and private partnerships such as this will yield lessons for the many health challenges Gauteng faces. The article further highlights the allocation of funds for school infrastructure projects and the conversion of classrooms into smart classrooms.
