International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor clarified that the government has not made any decisions regarding the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador to South Africa.

In a recent announcement, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) revealed their intentions to introduce a motion in the National Assembly calling for the removal of Ambassador Eliav Belotserkovsky, as per EWN.

Earlier this week, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshaveni expressed the cabinet’s concern over the ambassador’s comments, showing support for Palestinians in the country.

When addressing questions in the National Assembly, Minister Pandor stressed that the government has not reached a point where such a drastic action, like expulsion, has been determined.

She further mentioned, “As to expulsion, there is no decision with respect to that at this moment. Should such a decision be made, we would come into the public space and make the necessary announcement.”

Deputy Minister Alvin Botes shared that all South African diplomats based in Tel Aviv have been withdrawn from consultations led by a charge d’affaires since the ambassador’s recall in 2018. This move is a solid response to the actions of the state of Israel against the people of Palestine.

However, several opposition parties opposed this decision. They emphasised the importance of South Africa maintaining its presence during these challenging times.
