Joburg building caught fire

A large number of locals faced devastation over the Easter weekend as a Joburg building caught fire, forcing them to evacuate and leaving their belongings destroyed.

According to Sunday World, the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) reported the fire on Sunday, which started in the shacks on Commissioner Street in Fairview.

Fortunately, Johannesburg EMS spokesman Nana Radebe-Kgiba confirmed that all occupants of the approximately sixty impacted shacks managed to escape unharmed.

Preliminary investigations into the cause of the fire are underway, with disaster management assisting the affected families, according to Radebe-Kgiba.

This incident adds to a series of fires that have plagued Johannesburg since August 2023, notably the tragic fire in Marshalltown that claimed 77 lives.

The affected building was known for its high crime rate and housed numerous illegal activities, including drug trafficking.

Following the arrest of Thembiso Lawrence Mdlalose, who is accused of starting the fire, the case is currently before the court, with charges including arson, murder, and attempted murder.

In a separate incident, the SARS building in the CBD caught fire in September 2023, leading to its closure and the transition to virtual services.
