Eastern Cape police arrest 35 undocumented foreign nationals ahead of June 30 marches
Police in the Eastern Cape carried out a large‑scale enforcement operation on 28 June 2026, arresting 35 undocumented foreign nationals and issuing fines to others as part of preparations ahead of the nationwide 30 June anti‑immigration marches.
Operation and arrests
Members of the South African Police Service (Saps) in the Chris Hani District conducted the operation under the banner of the 30 June Operational Deployment. Police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said the operation focused on high‑visibility patrols across suburbs and business nodes, identifying undocumented foreign nationals in workplaces and public spaces, and carrying out stop‑and‑search operations on major roads and streets.
“A total of 35 foreign nationals were arrested for being in the country without valid documentation. A further 17 foreign nationals received fines totalling R21,000 for possessing expired permits,”
Nationalities and targeted areas
Mgolodela said the majority of those arrested originate from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). She also named Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, and Bangladesh among the countries of origin.
Business inspections and a related break‑in
During business inspections in Michaulsdal, Nxuba, Mgolodela said an Ethiopian shop owner fled and locked his premises when police approached. While the shop was closed, four suspects aged between 33 and 55 broke into the shop and stole items. “They were immediately arrested while still in possession of the stolen goods and are expected to appear in the Nxuba Magistrate’s Court soon,” Mgolodela said.
Traffic enforcement and command praise
As part of the immigration operations, motorists were issued traffic fines exceeding R10,000 for various violations, Mgolodela said.
District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph commended officers for their “dedication and vigour” in executing duties under the 30 June Operational Deployment, the police said.
Operations continue
With one day remaining before the 30 June marches, the police said the operations are continuing.
