Zuma dissolves Presidential Task Team, installs Strategic Presidential Team as MK party authority
Jacob Zuma has dissolved the MK party’s Presidential Task Team and set up a Strategic Presidential Team to lead the organisation and oversee finances and strategy.
Jacob Zuma has dissolved the MK party’s Presidential Task Team and installed a new Strategic Presidential Team (SPT) as the organisation’s highest decision-making body, the party announced on 28 July 2026.
Leadership restructure follows takeover of party finances
The move follows Zuma’s decision last week to place the MK party’s finances under his personal control and to revoke signing authority from all party officials with immediate effect. A 23 July letter circulated to national, provincial and regional structures said the revocation applies to every official regardless of rank, including the treasurer-general and secretary-general.
New body named highest authority
Party spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu confirmed the restructuring and described the Strategic Presidential Team as “constituted as the highest decision‑making and strategic leadership body of the organisation, vested with overarching authority to provide leadership, strategic direction, organisational coordination and oversight.”
Mandate and powers transferred
Mahlangu said the change transfers all powers and responsibilities previously held by the Presidential Task Team to the SPT. He said the new team will oversee administration, finances, electoral strategy and organisational cohesion, and will be responsible for long-term strategic planning, directing and monitoring implementation of party policies, and strengthening coordination across all structures.
Consolidation and call for unity
According to Mahlangu, the decision aims to consolidate authority, reduce fragmentation in decision-making and ensure disciplined, unified execution of party resolutions and programmes. He urged leaders, members of parliament, public representatives, members and organisational structures to support and implement the decision.
The announcement marks a change in the MK party’s leadership framework, with the SPT assuming responsibility for governance, administration and electoral mobilisation.
