Unregistered Assault Rifle Found Loaded with Ammunition in Thembisa
In Thembisa, police responded to reports of an armed robbery. They discovered an unregistered assault rifle, along with ammunition, at the scene. IOL reports that the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) revealed that the suspects fled upon the arrival of law enforcement, abandoning the assault rifle in their Ford Fiesta getaway vehicle. EMPD spokesperson Marie Mashishi reported the recovery of the illegal weapon and live rounds in Thembisa.

Law enforcement officers swiftly acted on a tip-off regarding an ongoing armed robbery in the Umfeyaneng section of Thembisa. Upon reaching the location, officers observed two individuals escaping into nearby terrain. The unlocked Ford Fiesta found on the premises contained the loaded Colt semi-automatic rifle, complete with serial numbers. EMPD armourers verified that the firearm was not registered in South Africa.
Authorities registered a case of illegal weapon and ammunition recovery at the Thembisa South police station. The vehicle housing the assault rifle was impounded for further investigation.
