Over 250 Pieces of Illegal Mining Equipment Obliterated

Over 250 pieces of illegal mining equipment

Over 250 pieces of illegal mining equipment have been confiscated and destroyed during extensive operations across the West Rand, including areas like Mohlakeng, Carletonville, and Westonaria.

Collaborative efforts between the police and various other law enforcement agencies culminated in the destruction of equipment used by illegal miners. Illegal mining has posed a persistent and significant challenge in Krugersdorp and its surroundings.

One of the most prominent instances of illegal mining this year was the collapse of Windsor Road, leading to its temporary closure. This incident disrupted transportation and raised concerns about potential damage to water pipes, which could have implications for the local water supply.

Law enforcement agencies have increased their efforts to combat illegal mining activities. Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police Commissioner, indicated officers had seized and demolished a substantial amount of equipment used for illegal mining. They took this measure to prevent the stolen equipment from being reused for illicit activities.

Major General Kekana explained, “Most of the material used was confiscated after various crime prevention operations that the West Rand Police took part in. Not only was it Krugersdorp but included the Mohlakeng, Muldersdrift, Carletonville, and Westonaria areas too.”

The destruction of the confiscated material was witnessed by various stakeholders, including representatives from Community Policing Forum (CPF) members and Crime Prevention Wardens. The items destroyed were crusher balls, hammers, spades, penduka stands, and penduka drums.
