A political analyst mentions that the Speaker of the National Assembly’s legal troubles may be responsible for the expected losses in ANC support by the May elections. Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula’s application to stop her arrest over alleged misconduct in the Pretoria High Court is scheduled for today’s closing argument. Jacaranda FM reports that the corruption allegations against her amount to hundreds of millions from a military contractor when she was the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans.

Last week, the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate raided her Johannesburg residence. In her court application, Mapisa-Nqakula seeks full disclosure of the case details, including charges and investigative documents. The Investigating Directorate plans to contest the application, labelling it as groundless.

Political analyst Levy Ndou predicts the ruling party must engage in damage control efforts. “These issues inevitably tarnish political parties, and the ANC needs to focus on managing these challenges,” Ndou remarked.
