Pretoria Professor Nominated for International Court of Justice

A prominent professor of international law from the University of Pretoria has officially announced his candidacy for the esteemed judge position at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Professor Dire Tladi, renowned for his expertise in international law, received the endorsement of South Africa’s cabinet in May 2023, solidifying his bid for the prestigious role.

The election to appoint judges to the ICJ is scheduled to take place in November, wherein the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council will elect 15 judges. These judges will serve a nine-year term at the court, which is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands.

The ICJ is crucial in resolving legal disputes between nations based on international law. It also provides authoritative advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorised United Nations organs and specialised agencies.

The nomination of Professor Tladi has garnered widespread support, with the UP Future Africa Institute and the University of Pretoria commending his candidacy for the ICJ. They believe his appointment would greatly contribute to advancing international law and pursuing global justice.

Prof. Tladi’s leadership and unwavering commitment to international law are evident in his notable achievements. Currently serving as the president of the South African branch of the International Law Association and an executive member of the International Law Association, he has consistently demonstrated his dedication to the field.

Moreover, Prof. Tladi holds the esteemed Future Africa Research Chair in Global Equity, a position he assumed in March 2023. His primary objective within this role is to develop multi-perspective strategies for promoting global equity.

Expressing his gratitude for the nomination, Prof. Tladi stated, “I am deeply honored to be nominated as South Africa’s candidate for the International Court of Justice. If elected, I will diligently fulfill my responsibilities and contribute to the court’scourt’s mission of upholding international law and promoting global equity.”

Throughout his career, Prof. Tladi has held several key positions within international law. He was chair of the International Law Commission, a prestigious organ of the United Nations renowned for its contributions to the ICJ. Furthermore, he provided invaluable expertise as the legal adviser to the South African mission in New York and as a special adviser to the South African foreign minister.

Prof. Tladi’s scholarly contributions are equally impressive, with over 100 academic publications, including articles, books, and book chapters. He holds an impressive educational background, having obtained a BLC LLB (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria, an LLM from the University of Connecticut, and a PhD from Erasmus University Rotterdam. He also served as a member of the United Nations International Law Commission from 2012 to 2022, further highlighting his expertise and experience in international law.
